The Castro & Mission District Free Tour

We’ll meet at the 24th St. Mission BART Plaza, specifically in front of the Carlos Santana mural, to begin this free tour of the Mission District. It’s time to visit one of San Francisco’s oldest, most vibrant, and culturally rich neighborhoods!

We’ll start by exploring the Mission District, known as San Francisco’s Latino neighborhood, and learning about the history of this mural, which celebrates the legacy of legendary guitarist Carlos Santana as well as his family’s contribution to the city’s Latino music scene.

We’ll stroll east along 24th Street, passing through incredibly beautiful alleys like Lilac Street, which is filled with graffiti and contemporary art that’s sure to impress you. Our next stop will be at the “Once Upon a Time in the Mission” mural, which perfectly captures the neighborhood’s history.

The free tour will take us to Taquería Vallarta, an iconic Mexican restaurant whose atmosphere and authentic street-style vibe will win you over. In addition to learning all about San Francisco's Mexican culinary heritage, you’ll have the chance to try their famous tacos if you'd like.

Our walk will take us to Balmy Alley, San Francisco’s most famous alley. In this corner of the Mission District, you’ll see murals that address a wide range of social issues, such as human rights and social justice. These murals are the perfect way to learn about the changes the neighborhood has undergone and the various local activist movements taking place in this American city.

Naturally, we’ll head into Precita Eyes, where, in addition to picking up a few items, you can continue learning about urban art, Chicano history, and community muralism in the Mission District.

Finally, we’ll arrive at La Espiga de Oro, a spot that’s sure to whet your appetite with its exquisite desserts and sweets. Be sure to try the hot chocolate or the famous traditional Central American sweet bread!

3 hours later, we’ll say our goodbyes at this final stop and wrap up the free tour.
