Guided tours and free tours in Ghent

Ghent sits at the confluence of the Leie and Scheldt rivers in the heart of Flanders, and for a couple of centuries in the medieval period it was one of the largest and wealthiest cities in northern Europe. That history is still visible in the skyline, where the towers of Saint Bavo's Cathedral, Saint Nicholas' Church, and the Belfry rise within a few hundred metres of each other above the old city. The Graslei and Korenlei canal banks preserve a stretch of medieval guild houses that give a clearer picture of the city's trading past than almost anywhere else in Belgium. Ghent is less visited than Bruges but no less rewarding, and a guide makes a real difference in a city where the context is everything.

Types of Guided Tours in Ghent

  • City walking tours: Both free and paid guided tours cover the historic centre, taking in the main medieval landmarks and the canal banks. The paid guided tour keeps groups small and goes deeper into Ghent's history as a centre of Flemish trade and culture.
  • Evening tours: The free evening tour explores the old town after dark, covering the myths and legends attached to Ghent's oldest streets and monuments. The city is particularly atmospheric at night when the crowds thin out.
  • Private tours: A private guide for two to four hours gives you full flexibility over pace and focus, well suited to travelers who want to spend more time inside specific monuments or explore beyond the standard route.

Planning Your Guided Tour in Ghent

Most tours run between one and a half and two hours, with private tours extending to four. Meeting points are typically near the Belfry or the Graslei, both straightforward landmarks to find in the centre. Cancellation policies vary by listing so check before booking, and confirm whether any monument entry is included in the price or ticketed separately on arrival.
