Tajogaite Volcano Sunset Hike + Llanos del Jable Viewpoint Picnic

  • 19 reviews | 145 travellers
Yesterday we hiked the Tajogaite trail and we absolutely loved it! Mario was our guide and he shared the history of La Palma, and especially the volcano, in a friendly, engaging, and fascinating way. He helped us better understand everything the people of La Palma went through and see firsthand the impact of the eruption. Without a doubt, a highly recommended and enriching experience. Thank you, Mario, for sharing your knowledge and making this hike so enjoyable for us.

Activity Details

Exploring the impressive Tajogaite volcano in the Cumbre Vieja Natural Park is a must on any trip to La Palma. But can you imagine doing it at sunset? This hiking excursion will leave you completely in love with the Isla Bonita!

At the designated time, we'll meet on Calle Antonio Pérez in El Paso and, once everyone's together, we'll travel by minibus to the starting point of the hike in Llanos del Jable. The tour runs in a small group of no more than 8 people.

The day trip will take us close to the crater of Tajogaite, the most recent volcano on La Palma, illuminated by the golden light of the sunset. Along the way, we'll learn about the details of the September 19, 2021 eruption and the changes it brought to the island's landscape.

The hiking route, approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) long and low in difficulty, will take us through ash and lapilli, while Canarian pine trees gradually regenerate across this volcanic landscape, all surrounded by the intense colors that shift and change as the sun sinks lower in the sky.

Lastly, we'll arrive at the Llanos del Jable Astronomical Viewpoint, where we'll enjoy spectacular views of El Paso, the Aridane Valley, and of course La Palma's legendary starry sky. The island is recognized as a Starlight Reserve for the exceptional quality of its night sky!

With this unforgettable scene before us, we'll enjoy a picnic-style tasting of local products from La Palma, such as tostas (toasted bread) served with mojos, figs, and nuts, accompanied by wines or fruit juices.

Finally, we'll return to our starting point in El Paso, where we'll part ways 4 hours after we began.d 4.5 hours.

Itinerary Changes

Starting November 1, 2026 (inclusive), the route for this activity will change; we'll now watch the sunset from designated viewpoints facing the volcano's crater.

Additionally, from that date onwards, the tasting of local products will no longer be included.
