Day Trips from Amsterdam

Amsterdam sits at the heart of a region that rewards exploration in every direction. Within a couple of hours by coach you can reach working windmill villages, medieval cheese markets, car-free canal towns, the tulip fields of the Bollenstreek, the modernist skyline of Rotterdam, the medieval streets of Bruges, and a national park with one of the finest art collections in the Netherlands. The catalog here covers all of that range, from a focused half-day at Zaanse Schans to a full day crossing into Belgium. Back in Amsterdam for the evening, dinner in the Jordaan or an evening walk along the Amsterdam Canals are both lovely plans!

What to See Near Amsterdam

  • Zaanse Schans: a preserved windmill village on the Zaan River just north of Amsterdam, with working mills, traditional Dutch houses, and demonstrations of cheese and clog making
  • Volendam, Marken and Edam: a cluster of historic fishing villages and cheese towns on the shores of the IJmeer, each with a distinct character and within easy reach of each other on a single day
  • Giethoorn: a car-free village in the province of Overijssel where all transport moves by boat through a network of narrow canals, earning it the nickname the Dutch Venice
  • Keukenhof Gardens: the most famous tulip garden in the world, open seasonally from March through May, covering 79 acres of flowering bulbs in the fields south of Haarlem
  • Rotterdam, Delft and The Hague: three distinct Dutch cities in a single southward route, covering modernist port architecture, Delftware pottery, and the political capital of the Netherlands
  • Bruges: the intact medieval canal city in West Flanders, reachable on a long day trip west into Belgium, with its historic center largely unchanged since the 15th century
  • Haar Castle: the largest castle in the Netherlands, a neo-Gothic fortress set in landscaped grounds near Utrecht
  • Herzogenbusch Concentration Camp: a World War II memorial site north of Den Bosch, one of the most significant Holocaust sites accessible as a day trip from Amsterdam
  • Texel Island: the largest of theDay trips from Amsterdam cover Zaanse Schans, Giethoorn, Keukenhof, Bruges, Rotterdam and Texel Island. Book guided excursions online with Civitatis.

Getting from Amsterdam to Zaanse Schans and Giethoorn

Both destinations are most efficiently reached on a guided excursion. Zaanse Schans is accessible by public transport but a guided tour provides context for what you are looking at and manages the logistics of combining it with Volendam, Edam, or Marken in a single day. Giethoorn has no train connection and requires a coach transfer, making a guided day trip the standard format for visitors from Amsterdam. Transport is included on all listings and most tours include a local guide or audio commentary throughout.

How to Choose Your Day Trip

Day trips from Amsterdam range from a focused three-hour self-guided visit to Zaanse Schans to a full fifteen-hour crossing into Belgium. Most standard excursions run between six and nine hours, with private day trip options available for groups wanting a fully flexible itinerary. Always check each individual product page for what is included in terms of entry fees, boat trips, and meal stops, as these vary across the catalog. Advance booking is strongly recommended for the Keukenhof Gardens, which operates seasonally and sells out quickly during the tulip season from March through May.
